Detoxification
Detoxification regimes come in various forms, but the general aim is to eliminate toxic compounds
from the body that have accumulated in the body (and particularly the digestive system) over time.
Sadly, in this modern age, a lot of our water and food contains chemical substances that are foreign
(and sometimes highly poisonous) to our bodies. We're at the same time subjected to an ever-
increasing quantity of toxins in the environment every single day - even the air we take in includes
such compounds.
The liver is the body’s prime detoxification organ. Every contaminant absorbed into your body (no
matter whether eaten in food, drunk, inhaled or taken in via the skin) will end up at the liver.
Although the most important, the liver is only one component of a number of other detoxification
systems in the body and its task is to convert contaminants into versions more easily excreted by the other organs comprising:
•
the digestive system - nutritional medicine attributes a lot of importance to the state of our intestines and bowels in terms of the well-being of our
liver, lymphatic system and immune system;
•
the urinary system - the kidneys take in toxins which have been converted and made water soluble by the liver, for instance the end products of
medications, organic chemicals, yeast and hormones;
•
the lymphatic system - this system filters the bloodstream of toxins and waste. Lymph nodes comprise high amounts of white blood cells that battle
bacteria;
•
the respiratory system - gas exchange is the most important purpose of the lungs; inhaled oxygen is given to the blood and carbon dioxide is
exhaled. The respiratory system includes a range of means to lessen the quantity of toxic compounds getting into our bodies. Such as the hairs
inside our nasal area trap dust and pollutants, which are expelled when we blow;
•
the skin - the skin is our biggest organ of elimination and, if doing the job optimally, is able to expel a significant amount of water soluble
contaminants through its pores. You might be surprised to learn that sweat has a similar composition to urine and is a necessary detoxification fluid,
which is one of the many reasons why exercise is so important for good health!
You can therefore see that, in most cases, our bodies have the capability to take care of the vast majority of toxic compounds to which our bodies are
regularly exposed. Then again, we can run into challenges if nutritional needs are not being met and/or the quantity of toxic substances becomes
excessive. One example is that skin complaints such as acne, eczema and psoriasis are usually treated by conventional medicine as ailments of the skin
itself, when in truth, they're often purely external manifestations of inner toxicity. In these instances, a body cleanse and detox course may be helpful.
How exactly does a body cleanse and detox work?
The human body was designed to make full use of natural materials, such as vegetables and fruits, along with herbs and phyto-chemicals from plants. Any
foreign, unnatural substances introduced into the body will likely stimulate some reaction from the immune system.
While there are lots of detoxification programmes around, they can vary quite substantially in their approach and benefits. Several deal with a particular
system of the body, like the digestive system (and the bowels in particular). Others may detox the liver, or the blood or look to improve the function of
the kidney or skin. An entire body cleanse and detox programme, in contrast, calls for combining all of these detox regimes, which can then help to revive
the body’s organs to their the best possible level.
The majority of cleansing routines that endorse positive lifestyle changes will most likely have some valuable effect. Even so, there are of course
additional factors that need considering, like a reasonable food plan, taking physical exercise, drinking pure water etc.
How body cleanse and detox programmes do the job will depend on the sort of programme being followed. For instance, those centered on the digestive
system will normally recommend a greater intake of natural, unprocessed plants (such as living or raw foods, high in digestive enzymes). These food
types will contain the dietary fibre needed for stirring good bowel elimination. These foods will also generally contain the expected amounts of vitamins
and trace minerals to provide for the eliminative organs mentioned above.
Dietary supplementation
Naturally, shifting nutritional and lifestyle habits for the future is usually quite a challenge - especially with the stresses and time constraints of modern-
day living. Whether executing a short-term body cleanse and detox, or aiming to introduce key lifestyle changes to lose weight, deal with a serious health
problem or just improve upon general well-being, it may be helpful to include dietary supplements in the programme to provide some additional support.
*Before changing your diet, undertaking a new physical exercise regime or taking health supplements, it is recommended to consult your physician or other qualified health practitioner,
(particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medications).
